Seed Dispersal Models for Natural Regeneration: A Review and Prospects

نویسندگان

چکیده

Natural regeneration in forest management, which relies on artificial planting, is considered a desirable alternative to reforestation. However, there are large uncertainties regarding the natural processes, such as seed production, dispersal, and seedling establishment. Among these dispersal by wind must be modeled accurately minimize risks of regeneration. This study aimed (1) review main mechanisms models, their characteristics, applications (2) suggest prospects for models increase predictability With improving computing observation systems, modeling technique has continued progress steadily from simple empirical model Eulerian-Lagrangian model. Mechanistic approaches with kernel have been widely used attempted directly incorporated into spatial models. Despite rapid development various wind-dispersal only few studies application We identified potential attributes that cause high poor simulation results scenarios: topography, pre-processing data, inherent complexities processes. can further improved incorporating abscission wind, spatiotemporally complex environments, (3) collisions canopy or ground during flight, (4) secondary long-distance predation. Interdisciplinary research linking climatology, biophysics, forestry would help improve prediction its impact

Seed dispersal effectiveness revisited: a conceptual review.

Growth in seed dispersal studies has been fast-paced since the seed disperser effectiveness (SDE) framework was developed 17 yr ago. Thus, the time is ripe to revisit the framework in light of accumulated new insight. Here, we first present an overview of the framework, how it has been applied, and what we know and do not know. We then introduce the SDE landscape as the two-dimensional represen...

Mechanistic analytical models for long-distance seed dispersal by wind.

We introduce an analytical model, the Wald analytical long-distance dispersal (WALD) model, for estimating dispersal kernels of wind-dispersed seeds and their escape probability from the canopy. The model is based on simplifications to well-established three-dimensional Lagrangian stochastic approaches for turbulent scalar transport resulting in a two-parameter Wald (or inverse Gaussian) distri...

Incorporating animal behavior into seed dispersal models: implications for seed shadows.

Seed dispersal fundamentally influences plant population and community dynamics but is difficult to quantify directly. Consequently, models are frequently used to describe the seed shadow (the seed deposition pattern of a plant population). For vertebrate-dispersed plants, animal behavior is known to influence seed shadows but is poorly integrated in seed dispersal models. Here, we illustrate a...

Integrating frugivory and animal movement: a review of the evidence and implications for scaling seed dispersal.

General principles about the consequences of seed dispersal by animals for the structure and dynamics of plant populations and communities remain elusive. This is in part because seed deposition patterns emerge from interactions between frugivore behaviour and the distribution of food resources, both of which can vary over space and time. Here we advocate a frugivore-centred, process-based, syn...
